From our advocates at CHIRLA:
“On Sunday, March 25th a coalition of organizations in L.A. (CARECEN, CHIRLA, COFEM, Hermandad Mexicana) organized an Immigrant Rights Forum in commemoration of the historic mega march in 2006. Approximately 5,000 people attended the event and over 4,000 letters were collected for Senator Feinstein demanding CIR. The key messages of the Forum were: Stop the Raids, Immigration Reform for All and Healthcare for all Californians. There was a star-studded line-up including Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, Assembly Majority Leader, Karen Bass, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and last but not least, Rep. Luis Gutierrez from Illinois.
Highlights included CHIRLA’s Know Your Rights DVD which really got the audience pumped. Also, Maria Jacinto, a community leader, approached Rep. Gutierrez on the side and said “thank you for introducing the bill, but your bill is not the kind of legalization I need. Maybe it’s good enough for you, but it’s not enough for our community.”
Gutierrez responded that he wanted the community to understand that he introduced the bill in order to get movement going so the debate wouldn’t die. There were also families who did not enter the event, but they wanted to make sure that they brought their letter along with letters they had collected from friends and family.”
