Update: Undocumented Immigrants Given the OK at one NC Community College

Last week, I posted on the North Carolina Attorney General's announcement that admittance of undocumented immigrants to Community Colleges would be left to the community college system to decide. This week, Catawba Valley Community College has stepped up and said that they will allow students to attend, regardless of immigration status.

"We're going ahead with our current policies, that we had prior to May," said Garrett Hinshaw, president of CVCC.

Hinshaw said he suspected many community colleges decided to revert to their old policies when deciding whether to admit illegal immigrants this fall. He said the N.C. State Board of Community Colleges will likely develop a uniform policy for the entire system this year.

"I think they'll make a formal stance on the policy. They'll take their time, to ensure it will be a good policy," Hinshaw said. "Their next meeting is in October, and I'm sure it will be discussed then."

Congrats to those students in North Carolina who will benefit from this!
