TODAY - National Day of Action
Today, in Milwaukee, Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington and other cities across the nation immigrant communities are mobilizing to demand dignity and respect for families and workers. Since the Senate failed to advance a comprehensive immigration bill in late June, the Bush Administration is seeking to implement a wide range of enforcement-only policies that will not only fail to address the nation’s broken immigration system, but will spread fear in American families and workplaces.
The arrest and deportation of Elvira Arellano, an immigrant rights activist from Chicago, is one example of how our nation’s immigration policies tear apart families. New regulations promulgated in August that would use Social Security Administration records to require employers to enforce federal immigration laws is a misguided attempt that could undermine the rights of all workers to improve their wages and working conditions.
