Senator Schumer: Not One Dollar for Trump’s Demands

WASHINGTON, DC— FIRM issued the following response after news reported that Senator Schumer was ready to offer the Trump administration $1.6 billion for the border wall.

Kica Matos, spokeswoman for FIRM, said:

“Our demands have been clear from the start: not one dollar for DHS.  This specifically includes denying the agency any money for Trump’s border wall. The Department of Homeland Security has proved to be a bad actor time and time again. In the last two years they have executed devastating raids in immigrant communities, locked children in cages, separated families at the border—at times forcibly, and transferred money within the agency to further terrorize our communities. They cannot be trusted to do right by our families. Trump’s current militarization of the border and treatment of migrants is the most recent example of this agency’s shameful treatment of our communities.

Voters issued a referendum on Trump’s dog whistle politics in November, rejecting anti-immigrant candidates across the country. Members of Congress—Democrats and Republicans alike—should pay attention to what voters have demanded of them and remember the power of immigrant voters.”

Javier Valdés, Co-Executive Director of Make the Road New York, said:

“We are seriously disappointed that Senator Schumer is willing to offer any concessions to an administration that has caused irreparable damage to immigrant communities in New York and across the country. At a time when the Trump administration is teargassing families and children at the border, it is unconscionable to consider giving them any additional resources to harm our communities. Not even a month ago, progressive leaders were elected to office after unseating long-term incumbents—that should be a warning to those who take our votes for granted, or choose to move away from bold, pro-immigrant ideals.”

Angelica Salas, Executive Director of CHIRLA, said:

“Immigrant families and our progressive allies are looking to leader Pelosi and Members of the House to hold the line for our communities and strongly reject any additional dollars to fund DHS. The House received a clear mandate earlier this month in a specific rebuke of Trump’s agenda, including the border wall. We must do right by our families and reject hate at every level.”

Lawrence Benito, Executive Director of Illinois Coalition of Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR), said:

“That we would even entertain giving the cruel and divisive Department of Homeland Security more funding is absurd. We are calling on Senator Durbin and Senate Democrats leadership to stand with us and reject any money for DHS. We heard it loud and clear from our communities in Illinois in November, and Senator Durbin has heard our demands in person. Our families are not bargaining chips and we will hold our leaders accountable for their actions.”
