Puerto Rico Police Department Unleashed, Violates People’s Fundamental Rights

(WASHINGTON)—Kica Matos, spokesperson for the Fair Immigration Reform Movement, FIRM, issued the following statement after police used violence against demonstrators at May Day rallies in Puerto Rico:

“It is our fundamental right to exercise free speech, including the right to assemble and rally. Yesterday, Puerto Rico’s Police Department violently attacked peaceful crowds who gathered to protest the government’s ineptitude and budget cuts. After eight months, thousands are still without electricity, there is a plan to close hundreds of schools, and college tuition will see an increase. PRPD unlawfully arrested protesters in their homes and in university dorms and threw tear gas into the crowds.

The police department was deployed not to protect people’s right to assemble, but to suppress their protest. We will not sit silently while this blatant attack on our rights is violated.”
