Immigrants in Texas Up Against Hate-Backed Bill

(WASHINGTON)—In response to the passage of SB 4, Texas’s “let’s terrorize immigrants” bill, Kica Matos, spokesperson for the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), issued the following statement:

“Texas’s Governor Greg Abbott’s relentless efforts to demonize and persecute immigrants continues as he eagerly awaits the opportunity to sign into law the country’s most hateful, bigoted and discriminatory piece of legislation to ever come across any governor’s desk. It is appalling, if not shocking, to think that Republicans in the Lone Star State are aggressively moving forward with plans to openly discriminate against, and racially profile immigrants. Texas has normalized hatred, racism and xenophobia in a way that no other state has managed to. Not only is this law unconstitutional, but it is an affront to justice and antithetical to the principles of fairness that most Americans cherish.

“Senate Bill 4 (SB 4) goes even further than Arizona’s notorious “show me your papers” bill SB 1070 that was eventually undone by the Supreme Court. Under SB 4, anyone who looks like an immigrant may be asked to literally show their papers. Immigration enforcement will be allowed to terrorize children in pre-k schools, men and women in homeless and domestic abuse shelters and families attending school events. This bill is completely aligned with Trump’s White Nationalist agenda. It is un-American and goes against all the values that we claim to believe in as a country.

“We are not going to wait for Republicans to have a change of heart. We are going to fight back, show up and vote.”
