(WASHINGTON)--In response to President Obama's State of the Union speech, the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), the nation's largest immigrant-rights coalition, issued the following statement on behalf of spokeswoman Kica Matos:
"We support President Obama's call to action on immigration reform. Our families across the movement have made it impossible for House Republicans to ignore the moral crisis they've manufactured in our communities. Republicans also understand that inaction on immigration is not viable, if their party is to survive. So, in the coming months, we will once again mobilize to reward those who stand with our community and punish those who stand by while their policies separate mother from child.
At the same time, we will not allow the President to have it both ways. The laws enforced under his watch have separated hundreds of thousands of children from parents. President Obama's de facto family-separation policy -- which Republicans all too gladly support -- is winning him a shameful page in history: the President who deported two million immigrants. While the President has signaled that he is willing to use his executive authority to advance his domestic agenda, he has refused to do so in the area of immigration reform. We remind the President that he has the power and authority to act to end the deportations that are destroying families, and call on him to act immediately and comprehensively to suspend these cruel policies."
