Fair Immigration Reform Movement Supports Call for President Obama to ‘Ban the Box’ and Implement Fair Hiring Practices for Federal Jobs

(WASHINGTON)—The Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM) joined the many civil rights, faith, social justice and advocacy groups calling on President Obama to ‘ban the box’ and implement fair hiring practices for federal jobs.

President Obama has already said he supports banning the box on job applications that asks if an applicant has a criminal record. During a demonstration today at the White House, formerly incarcerated people—who launched and are leading this campaign—and criminal justice reform advocates urged the president to issue an executive order and presidential memo to “ban the box” for jobs with federal employers and contractors.

“FIRM supports the opportunity to give 70 million Americans with criminal records the opportunity to have a fair chance at getting a job,” said Gustavo Torres, executive director of CASA, a FIRM member. “Major employers like Starbucks, Walmart and Target, along with 18 states, 100 cities and counties have already banned the box on job applications.”

During a speech in June at the annual convention of the NAACP in Philadelphia, President Obama said the U.S. criminal justice system remains skewed by race and wealth.

"In too many places, black boys and black men, and Latino boys and Latino men, experience being treated different under the law," President Obama said during his speech.

“Banning the Box isn’t about removing a question,” said Steve Huerta, a formerly incarcerated leader and member of All of Us or None in Texas from San Antonio, Texas. “It’s about opening doors, giving opportunities and changing lives.”
