Republican Led Hearing an Attempt to Undermine Basic Rights and Avoid Addressing the Real Solution: Passing Immigration Reform

WASHINGTON—The Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM) denounced yesterday’s Republican led House Judiciary Committee hearing on birthright citizenship, calling the spectacle another piece of political theater aimed at harming immigrant families.

“Holding a hearing on one of the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution is a glaring demonstration of the ludicrous lengths to which Republicans are willing to go to undermine immigrant families,” said FIRM spokesperson Kica Matos. “Automatically becoming a citizen of the country in which you are born is foundational to the America we know, love, and fight to protect. Republicans are revealing xenophobic, anti-immigrant extremist influence through this latest tactic.”

“Republicans are playing political games with our families and now with our Constitution,” said Matos. “They must understand that our community knows they are playing with the futures of our families and we will not be silent and we will not forget. As 2016 gets closer, we are taking note and will make sure to make our voice heard. We will make clear that we remember who stood with us and who was against us.”
