Buzz is Building for Rise Up! May 1

(WASHINGTON)— The following statement is from Kica Matos, spokesperson for the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM) ahead of the May 1st national day of action:

“The hateful, xenophobic words and actions of Donald Trump have awoken a new generation of activists and voters who refuse to let the Administration speak for them. Tens of thousands of allies across the country have pledged to join one of the 90 Rise Up! May 1 events that are planned. Progressive groups from faith, labor and racial justice have come together for the largest coordinated effort since the 2006 immigration reform marches.

“The energy around the movement against hate has spread to Silicon Valley, where Facebook and other startups have given their employees the day off to join the protests. Everyday Americans are jumping to action. Trump traded hateful rhetoric for votes on the campaign trail and in his first 100 days in office has showed no signs of slowing down the hate train. On May 1 we will send a signal to Trump—and to the Republicans who side with his atrocious actions—the writing is on the wall: the backlash to Trump may forever alter the balance of power in America.

“The breadth and diversity of actions coming together is truly inspiring.  Many places will treat May 1st as a no work, no school, no purchases, “Day without Immigrants.”  Some will engage in marches.  There are story telling events, live music, know your rights trainings and teach-ins.  In Colorado there will be a Coors boycott.  In Arkansas, everyone is being asked to wear white.  Never before have we seen such a powerful combination of protest, celebration and serious power building.”
