Bill Richardson Has Withdrawn Nomination

On Sunday, Governor Bill Richardson withdrew his nomination as Commerce Secretary in the Obama administration cabinet. The decision to withdraw came amidst a grand jury investigation of Richardson.

For the immigrant and Latino communities, this withdrawal comes as a blow:

"We are hugely disappointed. It's a stunned community out there," said Janet Murguía, president and CEO of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States.

"He is a very well-recognized leader not just in the Latino community but in this country and he has a long record of public service," she said.

There has been speculation as to whether Richardson was forced to withdraw, though he has publicly maintained that it was his decision to do so. He also maintains his innocence, citing that the trial would not be finished in time for his swearing-in as the reason for the withdrawal.
