Donald Trump’s Fake National Emergency is a National Disgrace

WASHINGTON, DC—Today, President Trump declared a national emergency in order to use his executive power to circumvent Congress and build his racist border wall. Hate by any means necessary.

Dorian Warren, president of Community Change Action, and Kica Matos, director of immigrant rights and racial justice at Community Change Action and spokeswoman for FIRM Action, issued the statement below:

“President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency is a national disgrace. He is undermining our values and our democracy in order to build his dangerous and racist border wall. Not only is this declaration illegal, it’s unconscionable and Members of his own party have rejected it. Trump, McConnell and Republicans in Congress held working people hostage during a government shutdown for more than 30 days to strong arm Democrats into advancing their anti-immigrant agenda. It failed. As a result millions of Americans are still recovering, but out-of-touch Republicans can’t relate.

“The only national emergency is the one in the West Wing as our democracy deteriorates at the hands of white supremacists determined to tear families apart. Our families are not pawns to be exchanged for the border wall. Our people are resilient and unwavering in their demands that our elected leaders uphold our values every single day. We are fighting for a new vision of America--one where immigrant and working families have more security. Like our ancestors before us, and like we’ve done countless times, we are going to roll up our sleeves and fight for the DREAM Act and permanent legislative solutions for TPS holders and to ensure that asylum seekers can reach safety.

Americans overwhelmingly rejected Trump’s hate when they came out to vote this past November. And that’s just the beginning. Anyone who is seeking our support in any election should fight alongside with us now. Republicans should do their job, not bow down to xenophobic hysteria.”
