Our Message to Congress: Do Your Job! Failure to Act Before Holiday Recess Leaves Tens of Thousands in Limbo
Kica Matos, spokesperson for the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), issued the statement below after Congress passed a continuing resolution without a solution for the 800,000 DACAmented individuals:
“Members of Congress failed to do their job and protect the 800,000 DACAmented individuals who are living a nightmare, fearing arrest and deportation. Instead of joyfully celebrating the holidays—like Members will be doing—anxiety and fear permeate our spaces as our community faces uncertainty.
Time has run out for tens of thousands of young immigrants who have already lost the protection afforded by DACA. They have lost their ability to work and take care of their families. They have lost their ability to drive and to enroll in public universities. These young immigrants are our friends and neighbors. They are integral parts of our communities.
America is on our side: 86 percent of Americans support legislation that will keep DACAmented individuals in the U.S.
If it was not clear after the electoral sweep in Virginia, or the historic victory in Alabama, Members up for reelection in 2018 hear this: the resistance to Trump’s white supremacy is resilient and we will not back down until our community is safe.”
