(WASHINGTON)–The following statement is from Kica Matos, spokesperson for the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM) in response to Secretary Jeh C. Johnson statement on southwest border security.
“Secretary Johnson’s statement attempting to justify terrorizing families fleeing terrible conditions is truly alarming, given the humanitarian crisis that is driving Central American families to the US. Deporting these families back to horrific conditions is not a reasonable or rational response to a crisis. We call on our leaders to reflect the values of our country and provide real assistance to those seeking refuge.”
“This is about the courage of moral leadership and on that front the President and Secretary Jeh Johnson are a complete failure. The intentional and heartless breaking up of refugees families is atrocious enough but the fact that it appears to be caving to the politics of the moment – including the rise of Donald Trump makes it all the more of a disappointment in the leadership of this President.”
“FIRM demands that President Obama, DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson and ICE Director Sarah Saldana immediately put an end to their plan to continue to raid people’s homes, terrorize families and rip them apart. If these families are deported — and most of them would be women and children, they would be returned to places they fled to escape being killed, raped or tortured.”
