WASHINGTON—The Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM) today urged House members to oppose an amendment that would keep DACA-eligible DREAMers from joining the military. The amendment, sponsored by Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL), would strike language in Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ)’s bipartisan supported amendment to the Defense Authorization bill that would allow the Secretary of Defense to consider allowing DACA recipients to serve in the military.

“The Brooks Amendment is nothing more than another anti-immigrant attack by fringe Republicans,” said FIRM spokesperson Kica Matos. “DREAMers who would enlist call America their home. They love and want to be able to defend our nation.”

“The Gallego Amendment received bipartisan support. To those  who  are letting themselves be swayed by right wing extremists, we have one message:  as 2016 gets closer, we are taking note and we will remember those who stood with us and those who stood against us,” Matos said.
