The following statement is from the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), a national coalition of grassroots organizations in 30 states fighting for immigrant rights at the local, state and federal level.
There is no greater champion for immigrant families than Rep. Luis Gutiérrez. He is a hero in the immigrant rights movement; one who has dedicated his life to championing the cause of immigration reform. Luis Gutiérrez has never hesitated to bring his voice and his relentless energy to the cause of families being ripped apart by deportation, including assisting hundreds of individual cases. He has sacrificed his own political interests time and again for a movement that has not always been popular.
In America, it is almost impossible to be an elected leader and a leader in a social movement at the same time – Congressman Gutiérrez has that role because he does not hesitate to “show up” in more than words – he brings his courage and soul to fight for justice.
“More than once, Luis and I have been arrested together for immigration reform – he’s singular among politicians in his willingness to put his life on the line for people who have no voice,” said Deepak Bhargava, Executive Director of the Center for Community Change, a proud member of FIRM. “When we win a pathway to citizenship for hardworking immigrants in this country, and when we achieve an end to deportations that are tearing families apart, Luis Gutierrez will be amongst the first people to thank.”
