Immigration Reform Groups Unveil Dreams Across America Tour

Ten-city train tour arrives in New York City on June 17th, aims to dispel myths and tell the real stories of immigrants

New York City.  Immigrants, citizens, labor and faith leaders, and business owners throughout the country today unveiled the Dreams Across America Tour – a nationwide journey via train that will educate the public to dispel myths, give real facts, and share personal stories about the need for just and humane immigration reform.

In eight days (June 13th–20th) via ten cities, the tour will bring together 100 diverse individuals, or “Dreamers,” from around the country.  The Dreamers will share their stories and convey the message that no matter what our backgrounds, immigrant or native born, we all cherish the values that make this country prosper.  But only by working together to fix our nation’s broken immigration system can we continue to achieve the American Dream.

Dreamers will arrive in New York City just before Fathers’ Day, and an event celebrating their journey and stories will be held at Judson Memorial Church in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, on Sunday, June 17th.  Further details about this event will be announced shortly.

“The Dreams Across America Tour reminds us that the immigration debate is about real people,” said Chung-Wha Hong, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition, one of the lead organizers of the New York event.  “As Congress considers devastating cuts to family-based immigration and a guestworker program that leaves workers with few rights and no future, we hope the inspiring stories of the Dreamers will convince lawmakers that they can and must do better for our families and workers.”

“Our members will be taking part in this tour because we are all impacted by our broken immigration laws,” said May Chen, vice president with UNITE HERE, another lead organizer of the event.  “This is why it’s crucial that we take our stories across the country because in the end, immigrant or American born, we all have the same hopes, dreams and aspirations.”

Major stops along the tour will include Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Antonio and Richmond.  As the Dreamers embark on the journey, their stories and those of thousands of others will be prominently highlighted via the web, blogs and video.

The tour will culminate in Washington, D.C. on June 19th and 20th, where the Dreamers will join hundreds of immigrant children and their families at an event organized by the Fair Immigration Reform Movement.  Dreamers also will share their stories with Members of Congress, who will hear first-hand about the human impact of our broken immigration system and the need for reforms that address the realities of our economy, our country, and our immigrant families.
