(WASHINGTON)— Kica Matos, spokesperson for the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), issued the statement below after the announcement that Donald Trump will end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
“This action by Trump is nothing less than deplorable and it confirms our worst fears. By shattering the lives and dreams of nearly a million young people, Donald Trump has chosen to side with the white supremacists roaming the halls of the White House.
This decision is spineless and cruel. It reflects the poor judgment of a President buoyed by racists and lacking a moral compass.
DACA has allowed Dreamers to contribute to their communities, to work, to go to school and to live their lives without fear of being ripped away from their families, and from a country they consider home.
Dreamers are human beings, not tokens nor line items, who deserve dignity and respect. They have earned the love and respect of millions of Americans, many of whom know them as their neighbors, friends, fellow students or co-workers.
While our hearts are broken at this moment, our spirit is on fire. We will not forget—not today, not tomorrow, not ever. And we will fight back with everything we have. We will not stop until our families are safe and until the country reflects the beloved community we desire.”
The Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM) is the nation’s largest immigrant-rights coalition, with grassroots organizations fighting for immigrant rights at the local, state and federal level. For more information, go to www.fairimmigration.org or follow us on Twitter @Re4mImmigration.
