Comprehensive Immigration Reform Update from the Desk of Rich Stolz
Senate Majority Leader Reid (D-NV) appears ready to file for cloture no later than Wednesday this week, and the debate on S 1348 is expected to resume this Friday.
In the House of Representatives, the Democratic leadership is in a wait-and-see mode as they watch events transpire in the Senate. This is a problem, because the White House is already attempting to organize Republicans in the House to try to leverage the same deal they were able to broker in the Senate. The math in the House is just as rough. There are a number of progressive Democrats unlikely to vote for the Senate bill, at least 100 Republicans that would never vote for any bill, up to 50 Democrats that may never vote for any bill, and a number of moderate Republicans likely to be on the fence but pulled in different directions by the White House and by their own constituents.
