Secretary Johnson Must End Inhumane Detention of Immigrant Families

WASHINGTON—The Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM) applauded the 33 Senators who signed a letter calling on Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson to end the inhumane practice of family detention. The Senate letter complements last week’s House letter, both of which are part of mounting pressure to end the unjust practice of detaining innocent women and children seeking refuge from dangers in their home countries.

“We applaud the Senators for taking a stand and encouraging DHS to end family detention for families seeking refuge in the United States,” said FIRM spokesperson Kica Matos. “These Senators understand that treating victims like criminals is wrong and goes against our most fundamental values. Ending family detention is the only way to end the harsh treatment these mothers and children are facing.”

“We cannot turn a blind eye to the inhumane prolonged detention practices DHS is condoning. Prisons are no place for families and must end the practice of locking up mothers and their children seeking refuge in the US because it is downright immoral,” said Matos. “We...

Secretary Johnson Must End Inhumane Detention of Immigrant Families

WASHINGTON—The Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM) applauded the 136 House members who signed a letter calling on Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson to end the inhumane practice of family detention. This letter is part of mounting pressure to end the unjust practice of detaining innocent women and children seeking refuge from dangers in their home countries.

“We are encouraged to see that House Members are not turning a blind eye to widespread reports of inhumane treatment and prolonged detention of families in these facilities,” said FIRM spokesperson Kica Matos. “These Congressional leaders understand that ending family detention is the only way to end the harsh treatment these mothers and children are facing.”

“Prisons are no place for families. We must end the practice of locking up innocent mothers and their children. It does not align with our country’s values, and it is downright immoral,” said Matos. “We urge Secretary Johnson to seize this moment and end family detention for those seeking refuge in the US. Now is the time to end...

Immigrant Rights Groups Vow to Keep Fighting to Keep Families Together

WASHINGTON—The Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM) strongly denounced the ruling from a three judge panel of the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals denying the Justice Department’s request to lift an injunction and allow the administrative relief programs President Obama announced last year to move forward.

“This ruling is an affront for our immigrant families,” said FIRM spokesperson Kica Matos. “From the beginning, this lawsuit has been part of the ongoing anti-immigrant attacks against hardworking immigrants led by the extreme right.”

“This is a temporary setback, but one that we do not take lightly,” said Matos. “Our families are tired of waiting, and they are tired of living in fear. If anything, this ruling has made us even more determined than ever to continue the fight. Our movement will continue to fearlessly escalate so our voices are heard during this fight. We will push aggressively and vigorously until we prevail. Our families deserve to work and live in this country they contribute to every day and call home....
