Federal Judge Halts Hate-Backed Law SB 4
(WASHINGTON)—Kica Matos, spokesperson for the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), issued the following statement after a federal judge issued a preliminary ruling against the state of Texas and halted the implementation of SB 4:
“As families in Texas begin to deal with the devastation of Hurricane Harvey, immigrant communities can breathe a sigh of relief that a federal judge has blocked parts of SB 4, the country’s most anti-immigrant law. Black and brown families can now focus on recovery instead of living with the worry of survival coupled with the fear of deportation.
The preliminary ruling blocks key provisions in the law that prevent sanctuary cities, as well as the requirements that local law enforcement act as immigration officers and hold undocumented immigrants in detention. While this ruling is a temporary victory, it affirms what we’ve been saying: SB 4 is a racist law put forth by white supremacists whose only goal is to make America white again.
Hurricane Harvey has devastated Texas, displacing millions of residents from their homes. The state’s large immigrant communities should not have to worry about their status when seeking help for their families. As Congress returns to session next week, we urge all lawmakers to put politics aside when they reconvene to provide funds for all residents affected by Hurricane Harvey.”

Arpaio and Trump: Partners in Racist Crimes
(Phoenix)—Kica Matos, spokesperson for the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), and Petra Falcon, Executive Director of Promise Arizona (PAZ), issued the statement below after Donald Trump pardoned Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio:
“It is beyond reprehensible that Trump has pardoned Joe Arpaio for advancing racist policies that terrorized immigrants and people of color in Arizona for more than two decades. Arpaio is guilty of more than criminal contempt of court. He is guilty of tearing families apart, discriminating against people of color, and treating human beings without dignity and respect.
By pardoning one of the nation’s most extreme anti-immigrant sheriffs, Donald Trump is perpetuating Arpaio’s crimes and revealing his full-fledged support for a White Supremacist agenda.
Our communities deserve better. America deserves a president who denounces racism without equivocation, not one who makes excuses for hate and intolerance. Trump may have pardoned Arpaio, but history will not. We will continue to repair the damage in our society Arpaio caused, fight for our families, and oppose Trump’s repressive agenda.”

People’s Lives Are Not Bargaining Chips
(Phoenix)—Kica Matos, spokesperson for the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), issued the statement below rejecting Trump’s White Nationalist Immigration Agenda:
“White Supremacists have taken their hoods off, unafraid to terrorize black and brown communities because Donald Trump is proudly carrying their torch in the White House. The so called ‘deal’ leaked to the press today uses DACA as a bargaining chip for a misguided and dangerous legislative deal on right wing immigration policy. It is nothing more than a wish list for xenophobes that holds 800,000 DREAMers hostage in an attempt to execute their ethnic cleansing agenda.
DACA has opened doors for young people to live their lives, work and contribute to their communities without fear of deportation. Ending DACA would result in a loss of more than $460 billion from the national GDP over the next decade and remove almost 685,000 workers from the economy.
Immigrants and progressive allies have poured into the streets to defend the values our country was founded on.
The resistance is only getting stronger. We’ve come out in full force at airports, in front of the White House, at rallies in city squares and marches across the country to denounce the hate-filled rhetoric of the racist-wing. It is time the President of the United States does the same.”
