Arpaio is Guilty of More Than Contempt
(Phoenix)—Sulma Arias, spokesperson for the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), and Petra Falcon, Executive Director of Promise Arizona (PAZ), issued the statement below after a U.S. District Judge found former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio guilty of criminal contempt of court:
“For more than two decades Joe Arpaio used his position as sheriff to terrorize black and brown families, boasting about his gross abuse of power, racial profiling and the dehumanizing conditions at Tent City. Today’s court ruling affirms our belief in the court system to uphold our values.
The immigrant community is in solidarity, working to repair the damage and pain of Arpaio’s racist policies that tore families and communities apart. We will continue to work to dismantle hate at every level of government.”
Protect Dreamers Now
(WASHINGTON)— Kica Matos, spokesperson for the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), issued the statement below after Senators Durbin (D-IL) and Graham (R-SC) introduced the bipartisan Dream Act of 2017:
“An entire generation is counting on lawmakers to do the right thing both on the immediate threats to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and on passing a clean DREAM Act. Recently, ten state attorneys general—buoyed by the nativist wing of the GOP—urged the Administration to end DACA, an act that would derail the lives of nearly 800,000 young people who are actively contributing to their communities, working and going to school. DACA has opened a door of opportunities for a generation of immigrant youths, allowing them to live their lives without fear of deportation and those young people need assurance that the program will continue until the permanent solution, the DREAM Act, is enacted.
The introduction of the Dream Act of 2017 is a positive step and we applaud the bipartisan effort on the bill. However, we remain concerned that some in Congress will play politics and attempt to get more money for immigration enforcement. This is reckless and unacceptable and a poor reflection of our values.
Let this be a signal to all elected officials that the immigrant community is standing strong. We will not back down and we will not support a single dollar for separating families.
Republicans Rubberstamp Trump’s Hateful Agenda
(WASHINGTON)— Kica Matos, spokesperson for the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), issued the statement below after the House Appropriations Committee voted on FY18 funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS):
“Predictably, Republicans on the House Appropriations Committee failed to grow spines and vote to keep hardworking immigrant families together. Instead, they rubberstamped Trump’s odious deportation agenda and approved his DHS budget that includes $4.4 billion for detention beds, $1.6 billion for the border wall and nearly $300 million to recruit and hire new ICE and border patrol agents.
The consequences of Trump’s xenophobia will have long-lasting effects that span generations. The ramp up of Trump’s deportation machine will mean more family separation and more kids left without their parents. Liliana Cruz Mendez, Andres Magana Ortiz and Jesus Lara Lopez—along with their families and communities—are just a few of the most recent victims of Trump’s deportation agenda.
The line has been drawn, both for champions of immigrant’s rights and for those who have chosen to be on the wrong side of history. We demand not one dollar is allocated for separating families. We demand lawmakers at all levels stand up against bigotry and work on long-term affirmative solutions for immigrants.”
