Immigrants and Activists to Congress: Not One Penny for Trump’s Bigotry Agenda

(WASHINGTON)— The following statement is from Kica Matos, spokesperson for the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM) following the release to Trump’s FY 18 budget:

“Trump’s White Nationalist-inspired budget is tragic for immigrants and will tear at the fabric of our nation. The billions that he wants to set aside to demonize immigrants will have tragic consequences. It will mean kids growing up without their parents or abuelos. It will mean partners being separated from one another. It will mean friendly neighborhood faces living out their worst nightmares.

“Trump’s budget is an epic fail. It punishes families by decimating federal programs that help people put food on the table, while funding his inhumane, racist and bigoted deportation agenda. Instead of investing in communities, the Administration is hell bent on separating families and uprooting them from their communities. The budget includes $2.6 billion to begin planning for the wall and border security, and $300 million to recruit and train 1,500 new Border Patrol and ICE Agents in 2018.

“Our message to Democrats and Republicans alike remains the same: we will not not tolerate a single penny being set aside for Trump’s bigoted agenda. It is appalling that the Administration is attempting to fund hate off the backs of taxpayers while also working hard to criminalize all immigrants. The movement and our allies are watching and we expect our champions and supporters to fight hard on behalf of our immigrant families.”

Immigrants in Texas Up Against Hate-Backed Bill

Immigrants in Texas Up Against Hate-Backed Bill

(WASHINGTON)—In response to the passage of SB 4, Texas’s “let’s terrorize immigrants” bill, Kica Matos, spokesperson for the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), issued the following statement:

“Texas’s Governor Greg Abbott’s relentless efforts to demonize and persecute immigrants continues as he eagerly awaits the opportunity to sign into law the country’s most hateful, bigoted and discriminatory piece of legislation to ever come across any governor’s desk. It is appalling, if not shocking, to think that Republicans in the Lone Star State are aggressively moving forward with plans to openly discriminate against, and racially profile immigrants. Texas has normalized hatred, racism and xenophobia in a way that no other state has managed to. Not only is this law unconstitutional, but it is an affront to justice and antithetical to the principles of fairness that most Americans cherish.

“Senate Bill 4 (SB 4) goes even further than Arizona’s notorious “show me your papers” bill SB 1070 that was eventually undone by the Supreme Court. Under SB 4, anyone who looks like an immigrant may be asked to literally show their papers. Immigration enforcement will be allowed to terrorize children in pre-k schools, men and women in homeless and domestic abuse shelters and families attending school events. This bill is completely aligned with Trump’s White Nationalist agenda. It is un-American and goes against all the values that we claim to believe in as a country.

“We are not going to wait for Republicans to have a change of heart. We are going to fight back, show up and vote.”
