Rep. Schock is the Fifth Member to Support Citizenship Following Concentrated Pressure from FIRM
(WASHINGTON)— After months of intense, targeted efforts from the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), Congressman Aaron Schock (R-IL) announced his support for a pathway to citizenship as part of immigration reform.
“A pathway to citizenship is the only solution that keeps our families together while addressing our broken immigration system, and Congressman Schock did the right thing in supporting it,” said Mehrdad Azemun of the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), the nation’s largest immigrant-rights coalition.
Rep. Schock’s announcement makes him the fifth Republican congressman to support a pathway to citizenship after persistent, concentrated pressure from FIRM. Other members include Representatives Peter King (R-NY), Mike Coffman (R-CO), Daniel Webster (R-FL) and David Valadao (R-CA).
FIRM and its member organizations have been harnessing the power of immigrant families from across the country since day one to keep the pressure on the House to pass a bill. From rallying in the streets to engaging in online actions to lobbying in congressional offices and engaging in civil disobedience, our families have shown Congress that they are a force to be reckoned with. And as we move deeper into congressional recess, our actions and our voices will only become louder and more powerful.
Rep. Schock’s support comes as FIRM families are ramping up pressure on the House. The beginning of congressional recess marked the beginning of 40 Days of Action and Prayer, where FIRM families will organize across their communities to remind Congress that each day they do not pass a bill, 1,100 families are torn apart.
“This is only the beginning of a Congressional recess that will see family voices defeat the proponents of family separation across the country and in every key congressional district,” Azemun added.
Rep. Schock is one of 22 Republican members of the House to come out in support of citizenship. America’s Voice has compiled a comprehensive list of these members.
The Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM) is a national coalition of grassroots organizations in 30 states fighting for immigrant rights at the local, state and federal level. For more information, go to www.fairimmigration.org
