NC: BURLINGTON (NC) TIMES: Legal resident jailed for lying to immigration officer – For more than three months, Maximiliano Mateo-Mendez has been held in Triangle jails, accused of lying to an immigration officer who approached him on the street in front of the federal courthouse in Raleigh to ask why he was there. - WASHINGTON POST: Self-Deportation Has Few Takers - With a fanfare of news conferences and Spanish-language television and newspaper ads, U.S. authorities last week started giving 457,000 illegal immigrants a chance to turn themselves in without the usual threat of arrest and detention. - VA: WASHINGTON POST: Manassas Moves Toward Police Training Center – The Manassas police department received the go-ahead Monday from the City Council to begin planning for a training facility. The council approved a roughly $167,000 contract with Clark Nexsen Architecture & Engineering, authorizing the firm to develop a preliminary design for a 10,000-square-foot police training facility. It would be the first of its kind in Manassas, supplying officers with in-house firing ranges.
- KS: Immigration Issue May Stay Stalled - It’s a topic for feds, many legislative candidates say Kansas legislators talked tough about immigration reforms before the last session started. But in the end, they couldn’t agree on any. Changes in state law may be unlikely in the next session, too, if the views of south-central Kansas legislative candidates are any indication. Roughly half of candidates who responded to an Eagle questionnaire said immigration is a federal issue.
